UK Fungus Day - Rufus Stone
Sun 13 Oct 2013
Field event ID HF1321
OS Grid areas: SU2712
Weather: A dry start to the day but heavy rain forcast from midday. The previous week and seen reasonable rainfall.
Report: As part of the first ever UK Fungus Day the group decided to hold a foray at the Rufus Stone which attracted 27 participants, many of whom joined us for the first time. With a forecast of heavy rain later it was felt prudent to return to the car park at lunchtime. There was certainly plenty to see with several fungi to be found within a few yards of the cars including Amanita rubescens (The Blusher), Amanita muscaria (Fly Agaric) and Amanita citrina (False Death Cap) which started us off with a good introduction to the world of fungi. With several species of russula and lactarius species along with a couple of boletes, Boletus edulis (Cep) and Boletus badius, which the professional pickers had missed, the day was very productive. One or two forayers went to see the legally protected Hericium species which had been hacked off by food pickers showing how little help the law provides. The rain appeared as predicted and many then left for home apart from one or two stalwarts who stayed a bit longer.
